MailManager vs Mailstrom

Looking for a Mailstrom alternative, or wondering whether Mailstrom is worth it? Short version: Mailstrom is a power tool for clearing out a backlog, and MailManager keeps new mail sorted once the backlog is gone. Below is where each one wins. Every Mailstrom price and feature links to its source and was checked on October 8, 2026.

TL;DR

The real difference: cleanup vs. ongoing sorting

Mailstrom describes itself as “a web-based email client that allows you to take bulk actions on your inboxes” (FAQ). You open mailstrom.co and it groups your inbox into bundles: everything from one retailer, everything over a certain size, every mailing list you're on. Then you clear a whole bundle in one click. Mailstrom is openly anti-AI about this. Its homepage calls it “a power tool that amplifies your human intelligence” instead of algorithms “that try to guess what you think is important.”

Subscribers can also save rules, so future mail from a sender, subject or mailing list gets moved, blocked, snoozed (Chill) or cleared after a while (Expire) (FAQ). That's real ongoing help, but each rule is an exact match you set up by hand. A sender you've never seen before sits in your inbox until you notice it and write another rule.

MailManager comes at it from the other end. You pick your categories and it creates matching folders in Outlook or labels in Gmail. Your rules handle the senders you already know, and AI sorts everything the rules don't cover. New mail is sorted as it arrives, and old mail is cleaned up in batches. You don't need a separate inbox app: sorted mail lands in your Gmail labels or Outlook folders, so it shows up in whatever mail app you already use.

One credit sorts one email with AI. Live credits cover new mail as it arrives, and bulk credits clean up mail that's already in your inbox. Rules never use credits. If you need more bulk credits, the web dashboard sells one-time packs: 500 for $3, 2,000 for $5 or 5,000 for $8.

Rough math for a big backlog

Say you have 20,000 old emails. A month of Mailstrom Plus costs $14 and covers up to 250,000 emails with unlimited removal. With MailManager, your own rules sort for free, and each email the AI handles uses one bulk credit, so AI-sorting all 20,000 would take four 5,000-credit packs ($32). If the plan is “delete most of it,” Mailstrom is the cheaper, faster tool. MailManager is built for the mail that keeps arriving after the purge.

Where Mailstrom wins

1. Bulk cleanup tools

Mailstrom has been around since 2013 (TechCrunch), and the toolset shows it. You can bundle by sender, subject, date, size and mailing list, then delete, archive or move with one click, and undo from a history list. MailManager's job is moving mail into folders or labels you choose. If your goal is wiping out 40,000 emails by sender or size, Mailstrom is built for exactly that.

2. More email providers

Mailstrom has one-click sign-up for Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL, and also connects iCloud and other IMAP providers (homepage, FAQ). MailManager supports Gmail and Microsoft accounts only, meaning Outlook, Hotmail, Live and Microsoft 365. If your mail is on Yahoo, AOL or iCloud, MailManager isn't an option.

3. Unsubscribe, Block, Chill and Expire

These are first-class buttons in Mailstrom. Block removes the matching messages and filters out future ones. Chill hides a bundle until a date you pick. Expire clears out a sender's stale mail automatically (FAQ). If your main job is cutting off senders, that toolset is the whole point of the product.

4. No AI reading your mail

Mailstrom doesn't use AI and says it works from metadata: sender, subject, date and size (Mailstrom article, March 2026). Its FAQ adds that it stores subject lines and metadata on its servers and can access message contents to display them. MailManager's AI reads the sender, subject and a short excerpt to decide where each message belongs. If you'd rather no AI sees any message text, Mailstrom is the more conservative choice.

5. Many accounts on one plan

Mailstrom's Plus plan covers 3 email accounts and Pro covers 20 (pricing, checked 2026-10-08).

Where MailManager wins

1. It sorts the mail no rule covers

Mailstrom's rules match a sender, a subject or a mailing list. That works until a new store, a new school portal or a new contractor emails you. Any rules you set run first, and MailManager's AI reads the sender, subject and a short excerpt of everything else and sorts it into one of your categories, so mail from a sender you've never seen still gets sorted instead of sitting in the inbox waiting for a rule.

2. Ongoing sorting on every plan, free included

Mailstrom's free trial is a one-time snapshot of your inbox, and continuous loading and saved rules are for subscribers only (FAQ, checked 2026-10-08). MailManager's free plan includes 25 live credits every month for new mail plus 50 bulk credits for older mail, with no card. That's small on purpose: it's enough to see whether it works on your real inbox, but not enough to run a busy inbox for free. Paid plans are $2, $4 or $8 a month.

3. Lower prices on monthly billing

MailManager's top plan is $8 a month. Mailstrom starts at $9 a month, or $59.95 a year paid up front (pricing, checked 2026-10-08). Paid yearly, Mailstrom Basic works out to about $5 a month: less than our $8 plan, more than our $2 and $4 plans. The two charge for different things: Mailstrom for accounts and inbox size, MailManager for each email the AI sorts.

4. Sorted mail lands in your own mailbox

MailManager creates folders or labels in Gmail or Outlook and moves messages into them, so your mail stays organized where you already read it. To pick a category, the AI step sends the sender, subject and up to 500 characters of each email to Google Gemini. It doesn't send mail on your behalf except unsubscribe requests, it doesn't open attachments, and it doesn't keep a copy of your inbox. The one exception: when you correct a mistake, it saves one encrypted short example so it can choose better next time. You can pause sorting or disconnect at any time, and anything already moved stays where it is.

The AI will get some emails wrong. No sorter is perfect, ours included. When an email lands in the wrong place, correct its category in your processing history. MailManager moves it and learns from that correction for your account only. For senders that should always go to one place, write a rule. Rules run before the AI and never use credits.

What Mailstrom users say

These quotes come from public Reddit threads and Mailstrom's Chrome Web Store listing, newest first. We left out posts that looked like promotion for another tool.

The pattern: people like Mailstrom for the purge, and some treat it as a one-month job. MailManager is built for what comes after.

FAQ

Is Mailstrom worth it?

For a one-time purge of a large inbox, many users say yes, and some subscribe for one month, clean up, and cancel. Mailstrom plans are prepaid and non-refundable, so cancel before the renewal date (terms, checked 2026-10-08). If your real problem is the new mail that piles up every week, a tool that keeps sorting is the better fit.

Is Mailstrom free?

There's a free trial with no credit card. Mailstrom's FAQ says the trial loads a one-time snapshot of up to your latest 5,000 messages and lets you act on 25% of them, while a March 2026 Mailstrom article describes it as a 14-day trial. Paid plans start at $9 a month or $59.95 a year (checked 2026-10-08).

Is Mailstrom safe?

Mailstrom says it connects to Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo over IMAP with OAuth2, so it never has your password (homepage). Its FAQ says it stores subject lines and metadata on its servers and has access to message contents to display them (checked 2026-10-08). MailManager also connects through Google or Microsoft sign-in without seeing your password. Its AI reads the sender, subject and a short excerpt, and it doesn't keep a copy of your inbox.

Does Mailstrom work with Outlook?

Yes. Mailstrom supports Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live and MSN accounts, and Exchange only if IMAP is enabled (FAQ, checked 2026-10-08). MailManager works with Gmail and Microsoft accounts, including Outlook, Hotmail, Live and Microsoft 365, and sorts into Outlook folders or Gmail labels.

How do I cancel Mailstrom?

Mailstrom's terms say you can cancel from your Mailstrom settings page at any time, effective immediately, with no refund for the period you already paid for (checked 2026-10-08).

Is there a free Mailstrom alternative?

Gmail and Outlook both have free built-in filters and search, which may be enough for a handful of senders. MailManager's free plan adds AI sorting with 25 live credits every month and 50 bulk credits for older mail, with no credit card. For a step-by-step cleanup plan, see our Gmail inbox zero guide.

How does Mailstrom compare with Clean Email or SaneBox?

We haven't tested those two against Mailstrom head to head. Our MailManager vs Clean Email and MailManager vs SaneBox pages compare each of them with MailManager. If you want a faster email app rather than a cleanup tool, see MailManager vs Superhuman.
